Recreation At A Glance

alse River is the focus of recreational
activities in Pointe Coupee Parish.
The 22-mile long oxbow lake is a "trophy
lake", meaning that fish of a certain
size are to be thrown back to grow larger.
False River often holds the state record
for the largest bass caught, and has
the largest number of striped bass per
acre in the state. All water sports
- boating, sailing and skiing - may
be enjoyed in the clean, sparkling waters
of the lake. A wealth of commercial
establishments provide launch facilities,
boat rentals, supplies, and concessions.
A public boat launch with barbecue and
picnic facilities, fishing pier and
gazebo may be found downtown near City
Hall in New Roads,
on Morrison Parkway. Old River,
another fine fishing and recreation
lake, is also an oxbow of the Mississippi
River.

Civic Center and False River Park & Recreation on Major Parkway -
Where one and all can enjoy baseball, football, and basketball and the parish sponsored
children's leagues for competitive play.
Fishing, Boating and
Water Skiing - False River - One of the most
noted oxbow lakes in the lower Mississippi Delta, False
River was the main channel of the Mississippi River
until about 1722 when seasonal flooding cut a shorter
channel to the east. False River, a 22-mile long
"trophy lake," is known today for boating,
skiing, sailing and fishing. Between 1974 and 1981, more
than 265,000 striped bass fingerlings were released into
this like which covers 3,212 acres.
Flying - False
River Regional Airport - This 93.8acre air park boasts a
hard surfaced runway 5,002 feet long and 75 feet wide
which is lighted from dusk 'til dawn and has three
FAA-approved instrument approaches. The facility
includes a terminal building, utility shed, six
T-hangars, two executive hangars and tie-downs for 30
aircraft. The False River Airport is part of the (NPIAS)
National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems.
Golf - False
River Country Club - A private club that offers it's
members an array of activities, including a nine hole
golf course.
Morganza Floodway - The
Morganza Gates control
the water level of the Mississippi River during flood
season. The 125 gates can be opened to allow water to
flow through the Morganza Floodway to Morgan City and
then on to the Gulf of Mexico.
New Roads/St.
Francisville Ferry - Connecting Pointe Coupee Parish
with West Feliciana Parish at St. Francisville, this
ferry is the only access to both sides of the river
within 30 miles. The ferry leaves the New Roads side
every quarter hour and the St. Francisville side on the
hour and half hour.
Pointe Coupee Port and
Industrial Park - The only dock facility between
Baton Rouge and Natchez, nearly 100 acres of port-owned
land with all utilities are available for development on
the protected side of the levee. This facility offers a
floating barge, a 300-foot reinforced concrete finger
dock, four mooring dolphins, an 80-ton crane, access
road and parking area. The port's navigation channel is
12 feet deep and 250 feet wide.
Tri-Parish Cotton Gin
- Employing nearly 30 workers, this gin produces an
average of 25,000 bales of cotton each year.
